1.Scope*1.1Thesetestmethodscoverthetensiontestingofmetallicmaterialsinanyformatroomtemperature,specificall,themethodsofdeterminationofyieldstrength,yieldpointelongation,tensilestrength,elongation,andreductionofarea.1.2Thegaugelengthsformostroundspecimensarere-quiredtobe4DforE8and5DforE8M.ThegaugelengthisthemostsignificandifferencebetweenE8andE8Mtestspecimens.Testspecimensmadefrompowdermetallurgy(P/M)materialsareexemptfromthisrequirementbyindustry-wideagreementtokeepthepressingofthematerialtoaspecifiprojectedareaanddensity.1.3Exceptionstotheprovisionsofthesetestmethodsmayneedtobemadeinindividualspecificationortestmethodsforaparticularmaterial.Forexamples,seeTestMethodsandDefinitionA370andTestMethodsB557,andB557M.1.4Roomtemperatureshallbeconsideredtobe10to38°C[50to100°F]unlessotherwisespecified1.5ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasseparatefrominch/poundunits.Thevaluesstatedineachsystemarenotexactequivalents;thereforeeachsystemmustbeusedindependentlyoftheother.Combiningvaluesfromthetwosystemsmayresultinnon-conformancewiththestandard.1.6Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappro-priatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplica-bilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.

X3.1ScopeX3.1.1Thefollowingarespecififeaturesthatanassessormaychecktoassessalaboratory’stechnicalcompetence,ifthelaboratoryisperformingtestsinaccordancewithTestMethodsE8/E8M.X3.2PreparationX3.2.1Thelaboratoryshouldfollowdocumentedproce-durestoensurethatmachiningorotherpreparationgeneratesspecimensconformingtoapplicabletolerancesandrequire-mentsofTestMethodsE8/E8M.Particularlyimportantarethoserequirementsthatpertaintothedimensionsandfinisofreducedsections,asfoundinthetextandinapplicablefiguresX3.2.2Wheregaugemarksareused,thelaboratoryshouldemploydocumentedgaugemarkingprocedurestoensurethatthemarksandgaugelengthscomplywiththetolerancesandguidelinesofTestMethodsE8/E8M.X3.2.2.1Thegaugemarkingprocedureusedshouldnotdeleteriouslyaffectthetestresults.NOTEX3.1—Frequentoccurrenceoffracturingatthegaugemarksmayindicatethatgagemarkshaveexcessivedepthorsharpnessandmaybeaffectingtestresults.
