This paper proposes a new surface geometry for film condensation on horizontal tubes. The surface geometry consists of an array of square spine fins .012 in. and spine heights in the .030-.070 range. The purpose of this paper to present analytical predictions of the spinefin concept and compare the required fin material volume with that of presently used low integral-fin tubing. The resulting analytical predictions promise a reduction of fin material on the order of 60% for equal condensing duty. An experimental program is in progress to validate the analytical predictions.
