From a health perspective, dilution ventilation such as that required by ASHRAE Standard 62 is not intended to mitigate large intermittent releases of contaminants but to mitigate chronic exposures. Although new chemicals and other contaminants appear in our buildings almost daily, presenting an unknown amount of risk, it makes sense to work with the information we have on contaminants that have demonstrated harm to the population, like particles, formaldehyde and products of combustion.
