Todays burgeoning market for building energy modeling services presents great opportunities and challenges for practitioners. Challenges exist due to the expansive knowledge required to deliver services, the lack of standardized methods and the absence of building energy modeling (BEM) tools that support the modeling process. This session reviews key BEM tasks and identifies those that would benefit from being automated in software tools. The session provides examples of practical user-developed BEM tools that support delivering and streamlining services. It introduces efforts to develop modular, standardized whole-building simulation components, automated workflow procedures and an open source energy modeling platform.
