The Cooling Seasonal Performance Model (Cooling SPM) and Heat Pump Heating Seasonal Performance Model (HP Heating SPM), developed for DOE by Science Applications, Inc. utilize the Manual J analysis, which is the most common method for equipment sizing. In this method, the heating side is based on the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures, and the cooling side is based on outdoor temperature and a daily temperature range (low, medium, or high). An example of a Manual J analysis is discussed in Appendix A.

The objective of this work is to improve the load modeling technique of the Seasonal Performance Model (SPM) in order to estimate a more realistic load for seasonal analysis calculations. The developed model (Improved SPM) was compared with an hourly simulation routine to investigate the accuracy of the model.
