Purpose. Under certain operating conditions, vibration in rotating rolling bearings canbe of importance as an operating characteristicof such bearings. For this reason, the measurementof vibration emitted by a rolling bearingunder specified test conditions is utilized for studyand qualification as one facet of qualityassurance.

This standard on rolling bearing noise andvibration serves to define and specify, for purposesof bearing quality assurance, the physicalquantities measured and the test conditionsutilized in measurement of vibration and noisegenerated by rolling bearings. Based on the standard, parties to the acceptance inspection of rollingbearings may, by agreement, establishacceptance specifications and grades of rollingbearings with which to control bearing vibrationand noise.
