This extraction procedure is used for the estimation of oils, greases, and waxes in textile materials. Other solvents may be substituted only when small errors due to possible hydrolysis of soaps present in the textile material are unimportant. The ethanol extraction procedure is used for the estimation of residual soaps in textile materials, resulting from manufacturing or laundering procedures.

The testing and evaluation of a product against this method may require the use of materials and/or equipment that could be hazardous.
