Full Description

This is a physical method of quantitative analysis and may be used to analyze mixtures of fibres that cannot be separated chemically. It is particularly applicable to blends known to consist of linen and cotton, linen and viscose, or mixtures of wool and other animal fibres.

The accuracy of the method is dependent upon the ability of the analyst to identify the fibres present in the mixture and on knowledge of the mass per unit length or the density and diameter of each type of fibre. Photomicrographs of textile fibres and the use of selective stains as an aid to fibre identification may be found in several publications (see Notes Section).

The accuracy of the results obtained with this method will be decreased by the presence of nonfibrous finishes that cannot be removed.

This method may require the use of materials and/or equipment that could be hazardous. This document does not purport to address all the safety aspects associated with its use. Any one using this standard has the responsibility to consult the appropriate authorities and to establish appropriate health and safety practices in conjunction with any existing applicable regulatory requirements prior to its use.
